TAMPA, Fla. – The University of West Florida's volleyball season came to an end Thursday afternoon after the Argonauts fell to Palm Beach Atlantic University in the first round of the NCAA South Regional. The Argos fell to PBA 3-1 (25-21, 13-25, 19-25, 23-25) and finish their season with a record of 24-8 (17-3 GSC).
"Today was a battle," head coach
Melissa Wolter said. "Our players never went away and I'm proud of their effort and fight."
West Florida and Palm Beach Atlantic would be locked in a battle right from the start after UWF played with high intensity in the first set and rallied to a 25-21 win. The Argos totaled 16 kills in the set and saw three different Argos tally four kills in the set.
However, the Argos would go on to lose the next three sets by scores of 13-25, 19-25, and 23-25 to give the Sailfish the 34-1 victory. West Florida was led by
Corisha Smith (Inwood, W.Va./Musselman HS) who totaled 12 kills in the match and had an attacking percentage of .333. Sophomore
Holly Mattmuller (Venice, Fla./Venice HS) totaled 11 kills for UWF while
Cora Bidlack (Randolph, N.J./Randolph HS) had nine,
Rachel Neblett (Austin, Texas/Vista Ridge HS) tallied eight, and senior
Sarah Scott (Plainfield, Ill./Texas-San Antonio) totaled seven.
"I couldn't be happier with their performance today coming off of a disappointing performance in the conference championship which says a lot about their character," continued Wolter.
The Argos wrap up their season at 24-8 (17-3 GSC) and have advanced the NCAA Regional round for the ninth consecutive season while the Sailfish will go on to play the winner of Florida Southern College and Shorter University on Friday, Nov. 21.
