MOBILE, Ala. – The West Florida women's basketball team didn't play as well as they hoped in their 2014-15 season opener at Spring Hill on Saturday, but their effort was enough for a 57-53 win. The Argonauts had three players score in double digits, led by freshman
Toni Brewer (Huntsville, Ala.) who had 16 in her collegiate debut.
"Wins are hard to come by, no matter how you get them," said UWF head coach
Stephanie Lawrence Yelton. "We're happy that we won, but we're not satisfied."
Katie Bobos (Lowell, Ind.) and
Brianna Williams (Minneapolis, Minn.) both scored 12 for UWF (1-0) in the win, and
Kelly Preston(Waunakee, Wisc.) added nine. Bobos led the team with eight rebounds, while Brewer and Williams each grabbed seven.
The Argonauts got off to a strong start in the first half, highlighted by 12 unanswered points midway through the period. A layup by Preston capped the run, putting the Argos on top 20-6 with 11:36 left in the half. UWF remained on top through the end of the half, going into the break leading 28-15.
Spring Hill (0-2) came back with a strong start to the second half, and they took their first lead on a layup by Jewell Hill at the 7:13 mark. The two teams traded leads until the final minute, as a Twarner Witherspoon basket at 1:04 tied for score at 53-53. Brewer grabbed an offensive rebound and scored the putback to put UWF on top 55-53. The Argos made a stop on the next possession, and they made two out of their final four free throws to put the game out of reach at 57-53.
UWF outmuscled Spring Hill, winning the rebound battle by a count of 41-24. The Argos also edged their opponents in shooting from the field, finishing at 43.5 percent (20-46) compared to 43.1 percent (22-51) for Spring Hill.
The Argos won despite a tough day at the free throw line, shooting 17-of-35 for 48.6 percent. UWF also committed 28 turnovers as a team.
"I promise that we do shoot free throws in practice, and we make them," Yelton explained. "Today the difference in our game was free throw shooting. We turned the ball over too much. The defensive intensity wasn't quite there in the second half. We need to fix some things and get ready to face this team on Tuesday on our home court."
The Argonauts will be back in action in their home opener on Tuesday, Nov. 25, facing Spring Hill at the UWF Field House at 5 p.m. For information on all UWF athletics, visit www.GoArgos.com.
