PENSACOLA, Fla. – The West Florida women's soccer team advanced to the Gulf South Conference Tournament Semifinals with a 1-0, quarterfinal win over Shorter at the UWF Soccer Complex Tuesday evening.
"We got the win, and we're moving on," UWF coach
Joe Bartlinski said. "The important thing at this stage is to battle. I liked the way we played. We did some great things. We got the goal we needed. We had plenty of chances, but their keeper made some great saves."
The No. 3 seed Argonauts (12-5, 9-3 GSC) controlled most of the game, outshooting the No. 6 seed Hawks (11-8, 5-7) 23-8 and forcing Shorter to make nine saves. But, senior
Kelly Andres' (Jacksonville, Fla./Bishop Kenny HS) penalty kick in the 32nd minute was the lone goal of the game.
"It was a grind, for sure," Andres said. "We had to work really hard to win this game, and we're ready for the next game."
UWF plays No. 2 seed Valdosta State in the GSC Semifinals Friday at Ashton Brosnaham Park in Pensacola.
"That's going to be a tough one as well," Bartlinski said. "We're going to try to recover from today, have a good couple of practices, and then get prepared for Friday."
