PENSACOLA, Fla. - The West Florida women's basketball team returns home to the UWF Field House to host Gulf South Conference contests against Shorter Dec. 11 at 5 p.m. and Lee Dec. 13 at 2 p.m.
UWF opened the season going 3-1 in non-conference play, before sweeping Alabama Huntsville and North Alabama on the road in its GSC openers last weekend.
Shorter is 5-3 this season and 1-1 in the GSC with losses to powerhouses Nova Southeastern and No. 19 Union (Tenn.). The Hawks' most notable victory came against Christian Brothers Dec. 6. Lee is 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the GSC. The former NAIA powerhouse handed Union its only loss of the season and also defeated CBU in GSC play.
Hitting the Boards and playing Defense
ReboundsUWF leads the GSC and ranks No. 17 in the country in rebound margin, averaging 10.5 more rebounds per game than its opponents.
Toni Brewer leads UWF and ranks No. 4 in the GSC in rebounds per game (10.0).
BlocksUWF also leads the GSC in blocks per game, averaging 3.3.
Courtney Meyer (1.33) leads the conference in blocks and
Kelly Preston(1.00) ranks No. 4.
StealsBrianna Williams leads the conference and ranks No. 16 in the nation in steals per game (3.33).
3-Point DefenseUWF is also No. 1 in the GSC and No. 7 in the nation in three-point field goal defense, holding opponents to a 20.9 shooting percentage.
Brewer Repeats as GSC FOW
Toni Brewer was named the Gulf South Conference Freshman of the Week for the second consecutive week after scoring 26 points and 22 rebounds in two conference road games last week.
The Argo recorded a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds at Alabama Huntsville Dec. 4 and scored 16 points with nine rebounds at North Alabama Dec. 6.
