PENSACOLA, Fla. – The West Florida women's basketball cruised to an 87-72 victory against the Spring Hill Badgers in its home opener at the UWF Field House Tuesday night.
The Argonauts (2-0) were led by
Kelly Preston (Waunakee, Wisc./Denver) who scored 23 points and grabbed nine rebounds.
"Wins are wins," UWF coach
Stephanie Lawrence Yelton said. "We'll take them any way we can get them. Tonight, we came out with great energy. I think we were very poised and confident in the first half, and everyone on our roster got to play in the first half.
"In the second half, we had some lulls and gave Spring Hill some opportunities to cut into the lead. But, we kept our poise and played well the rest of the way."
UWF was up 8-7 with 16:00 on the clock before going on a 9-0 run in the first half. UWF pulled away to a 23-point lead, up 37-14, at the 5:43 mark. The Argos led 42-23 at the break. The Badgers cut the lead to within 10, down 70-60, at the 6:11 mark, but Spring Hill was never able to come closer than that.
Jasmine Wigfall (Orlando, Fla./Timber Creek HS) scored 14 and with seven rebounds and four steals, and
Katie Bobos (Lowell, Ind./Lowell HS) recorded 13 points and four rebounds.
UWF will host Arkansas-Monticello in the second game of the Comfort Inn-vitational Thanksgiving Tournament Nov. 28 at 4 p.m. at theUWF Field House.
