PENSACOLA, Fla. - The University of West Florida men's basketball team will host one game this weekend when Valdosta State University comes to Pensacola, Florida for a Gulf South Conference match-up.
The Argonauts will face the Blazers on Saturday, Jan. 17 at the UWF Field House at 4 p.m. CT. The Blazers come into the weekend with a 7-9 record and are 2-8 in the GSC, tied for ninth.
VSU is led by senior James Spencer who averages 14.4 points per game and 7.1 rebounds per game.
Around the GSC
Alabama Huntsville defeated Union last week to claim a spot in a four-way tie for first in the conference, an honor it shares with UU, Shorter and Delta State.
Two of the four teams tied for first in the conference will square off in an early-week battle when Shorter travels to Delta State on Monday. The Hawks are averaging 88.3 points-per-game, while the Statesmen are sporting a scoring defense of 73.0.
Two Tennessee schools will battle on Thursday when Christian Brothers will be in Jackson, Tenn., to take on Union. The stingy Bucs defense is only allowing 66.2 points-per-game, which is good for second in the league, behind UAH (66.5 ppg). On the other side, UU is outscoring opponents by more than eight points a game (8.9).
Straughn leading the GSC

Erin Straughn (Pensacola, Fla./East Carolina University) is currently tied for first in the Gulf South Conference in 3-point field goal percentage at 47.8 percent. He also is ranked 21st nationally in 3-point fied goal percentage. So far this season, Straughn has made five or more three pointers in a game on two separte occasion, including seven against Spring Hill on Nov. 25. Straughn is currently second on the team in points per game at 13.6.
