PENSACOLA, Fla. - The West Florida women's basketball looks to rebound from its second conference loss of the season when it hosts Valdosta State Jan. 17 at 2 p.m. at the UWF Field House.
The Argonauts' loss at West Georgia Jan. 12 snapped a four-game winning streak, but UWF has a four-game home winning streak heading into the weekend. UWF is tied for first in the GSC standings while VSU is tied for eighth, and the Blazers are on a four-game losing streak.
Argos Receive Votes in WBCA Poll
UWF received nine votes in the latest Women's Basketball Coaches' Association poll. The Argos tied for the 33rd-most votes.
It's the first time UWF has received votes since Jan. 14, 2013 of last season when it received one vote. The team has now received votes in two polls under coach
Stephanie Lawrence Yelton.
Brewer Earns 4th GSC Freshman of Week
Toni Brewer was named the GSC Freshman of the Week for the fourth time this season. She has earned half of the GSC FOW awards. Brewer led UWF with 21 points and eight rebounds while going 10-for-18 from the field against West Alabama Jan. 10. She scored 10 points with seven rebounds Jan. 5 against Christian Brothers.
Leading the Conference
As a team, UWF leads the GSC in blocks (3.8), defensive Rebounds (30), offensive rebounds (17), rebound margin (10.3), field goal percentage defense (34.5) and three-point field goal defense (22.8). The Argos are second in scoring defense (56.5) and third in scoring margin (9.5), steals (8.8) and turnover margin (1.46).
Individually, Brianna Williams is second in the GSC in steals (2.62),
Kelly Preston is third in blocks (1.23) and
Jasmine Wigfall is sixth in blocks (0.92).
Katie Bobos is tied for fourth in rebounds with
Toni Brewer (8.9). Brewer is also sixth in field goal percentage (45.0).

In NCAA Division II, UWF ranks fourth in three-point field goal defense, ninth in rebound margin, 14th in scoring defense, 21st in defensive rebounds, 22nd in field goal percentage defense and 23rd in offensive rebounds.
