PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Argonaut women's basketball team was unable to hold off a late Alabama Huntsville comeback Saturday afternoon, losing to the Chargers 77-71 in overtime at the UWF Field House.
West Florida (13-4, 10-3 GSC) led most of the game and the entire second half until UAH (9-10, 6-7 GSC) tied it 59-59 with 19 seconds remaining in regulation. The Argos missed a last-second layup before heading into overtime. The Chargers began the final period with four unanswered points and held on for the win.
"We came ready to play tonight," UWF coach
Stephanie Lawrence Yelton said. "We did pretty well in the first half. We went on a 7-0 run to start the second half, but we just didn't finish the game. We just could not get organized enough to finish the game."
Toni Brewer (Huntsville, Ala./Sparkman HS) nearly recorded a double-double in the first half with 13 points and nine rebounds. She finished the game with 21 points and a career-high 19 rebounds. She has recorded double-digit points in 10 consecutive games and all but two games this season. She scored 20 or more for the third straight game and fifth time this season. She's recorded a double-double in four straight games.
"Toni is motivated," Yelton said. "She wants to win, and she wants to achieve greatness. When you have a player with that kind of mentality it's hard not to have her in good situations. So, other teams have a tough time trying to stop her."
Jasmine Wigfall (Orlando, Fla./Timber Creek HS) scored 15 with three steals,
Brianna Williams (Minneapolis, Minn./North Dakota) scored 14 with six steals and
Kyla Muhammad (Pensacola, Fla./Pensacola HS) scored a career-high 14 points with a career-high six rebounds.
UWF will travel to Cleveland, Tenn. and Rome, Ga. to play Lee and Shorter, respectively, Jan. 29 and 31.
"This final stretch of the season is hugely important," Yelton said. "Now we're playing people the second time around. Now they're gearing for us. We have a target on our back, and we have to elevate our game because teams that we beat earlier are going to be better the second time around."
