ATLANTA – The No. 14 West Florida women's swimming and diving team finished its road trip with a solid showing at a double dual at Emory on Saturday. The Argonauts defeated Darton State 210-18, and they fell to five-time defending NCAA Division III national champion Emory by a score of 130.50-103.50.
The Argos had individual event wins by
Anna-Marie Macht (Markkleeberg, Germany) and
Josie McKee (Canton, Ohio), as well as a new school record swim by
Madeline Pitt (Trussville, Ala.).
The win by Macht came in the 200 Individual Medley, where she finished with a time of 2:09.41 to defeat Emory's Annelise Kowalsky by 0.15 seconds. McKee's win was in the 3-meter dive, where she scored 270.75 to edge Kellen Hope from Emory by 2.40 points. McKee's score was an NCAA qualifying score.
Pitt broke her own school record in the 1,000 Freestyle with a time of 10:27.68, which also marked an NCAA B-cut time. She was out-touched in the event by Emory's Rebecca Upton, who finished first at 10:27.34.
The top UWF teams in both relay events placed third. In the 200 Medley Relay, the team of
Nicole Machado (Belo Horizonte, Brazil), Macht,
Emily Mitchell (Allen Park, Mich.) and
Peggy de Villiers (Somerset West, South Africa) posted a time of 1:50.57. Later in the meet, the team of
Mariana de Paula (Santos, Brazil), Mitchell,
Danica Burnett (Perth, Australia) and
Sophia Oliva (Plantation, Fla.) combined for a time of 1:40.70 in the 200 Freestyle Relay.
"Emory is an incredible program with a storied history," said UWF head coach
Andrew Hancock. "It's great for a program like ours that's establishing its own traditions to fare so well against them. I'm proud of the way we competed today. We didn't back down, and we put in some great performances for this part of the season."
The Argos will have one final tune-up before the postseason when they return home to face Delta State and Thomas in their regular season finale at the UWF Aquatic Center at 12 p.m. CT on Saturday, Jan. 31. For information on all UWF athletics, visit
