PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida men's soccer team defeated the Concordia College Hornets on Sunday afternoon by a score of 3-0. Sophomore Chandler Castleman (Pace, Fla./Pace HS) recorded his first career multi-goal game in the Argos' victory. West Florida improves to 8-2 on the season, while Concordia, a member of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association, falls to 8-5.
Castleman received his first scoring opportunity off a free kick from freshman Michael Starkey (Huddersfield, England/Newsome HS) which was initially saved by Hornets keeper Thoby Wendy. Castleman immediately collected the rebound and put it away to give the Argos a 1-0 victory in the 17th minute. Castleman received another scoring chance, collecting a cross from junior Johnathan Quintero (Port Saint Lucie, Fla./Eastern Florida State College) and putting it past Wendy in the 22nd minute for a 2-0 Argos lead. West Florida would head into the halftime break up by a 2-0 score.
Junior Marteinn Urbancic (Reykjavik, Iceland/Commercial College of Iceland) and freshman Stephen Enderlin (Little Rock, Ark./Catholic High School for Boys) passed the ball back and forth in the Hornets' 18-yard box, which eventually lead to the third Argonauts goal of the day, as Urbancic buried a goal from an Enderlin assist in the 73rd minute.
Quintero led UWF in shots with five on the afternoon, while Castleman provided an additional three shots. West Florida outshot Concordia 20-11, with each team having five corners in the match.
With the win, the Argonauts tie its highest win margin of the season of three. West Florida also collected a three-goal victory over Christian Brothers on September 27.
Junior Andre Moreira (Rio de Janiero, Brazil/Colegio de A a Z) got the nod in net for UWF, as he posted his second shutout of the season and stopped four shots from the Hornets' attack. Moreira improves to 4-2 in net and now owns a 1.33 goals against average and a .750 save percentage.
West Florida men's soccer resumes Golf South Conference play this weekend, as the Argos play the top two teams in the current GSC standings. The Argos will travel to Alabama Huntsville on Friday, with the Chargers currently sitting in first place in the conference with a 5-1 GSC record. That game will take place at 7:30, while the following game against West Alabama taking place on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. West Alabama presently stands at second in the GSC with a 4-1-1 mark in the conference.
