UWF suffers loss to UWA from late goal

West Florida was able to keep West Alabama off the scoreboard until an 86th minute goal helped Tigers secure victory

October 18, 2015

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Florida men's soccer team held strong against the now-first place team in the Gulf South Conference in West Alabama, but a late Ashley Phillips goal helped the Tigers secure the 1-0 victory. West Florida drops to 8-4 on the season with a 2-4 conference mark, while West Alabama improves to 7-5-2 on the year and owns a GSC-best 6-1-1 league mark.

Phillips was set up deep on the right side with a free kick, and initially his ball appeared to be a cross attempt. After no contact was made by any Tigers forwards or Argos defenders, the ball was able to slip by West Florida goalkeeper Andre Moreira (Rio de Janiero, Brazil/Colegio de A a Z) in the 86th minute for a 1-0 West Alabama lead.

The Argonauts were outshot 13-7, however shots on goal were even at four per team. Jorge Chirinos (Tampa, Fla./Leto HS) led UWF in shots with two, with both chances being on target.

Moreira was able to record three saves and faced 13 West Alabama shots.

West Florida has two remaining regular season home games on its 2015 schedule, with both taking place this upcoming weekend. UWF will play host to Delta State on Friday at 5:00, before also hosting Mississippi College on Sunday afternoon at 12:30. Both contests are GSC match ups, with Friday's game being Homecoming and Sunday's game being Senior Day.
