October 23, 2015 BOX SCORE PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida women's soccer team shut out conference opponent Delta State 5-0 on Friday night.
UWF improves to 10-4 overall and 6-3 in Gulf South Conference play. With the victory, the Argonauts have clinched one of the six spots in the GSC Women's Soccer Championship Tournament. The game marked the sixth time the Argonauts have scored three or more goals in a game this season, and it was the team's sixth shutout.
The Argos struck early in the match, with a goal from
Daryl Bell (Sarasota, Fla./Southeast HS) in the 16th minute. Bell picked up her eighth goal of the season, tying her for first on the team with
Kaley Ward (Saint Cloud, Fla./Tampa). Bell received a low cross from
Sara Helgadottir (Grindavík, Iceland/Menntaskólinn í Kópavogi), who recorded her second assist of the year.
Taylor Burkhart's (Pace, Fla./Pace HS) second goal of the season came in the 27th minute on a low cross from
Amber Pennybaker (Indianapolis, Ind./Tampa), her fourth this year. Alissa Festagallo (Fort Pierce, Fla./Lincoln Park Academy) added her first goal in her junior campaign with a penalty kick in the 33rd minute, giving UWF a 3-0 lead as the team went into the half. Those three goals were West Florida's most in a first half this season.
Emily Vogler (Panama City, Fla./Mosley HS) padded the UWF lead just eight minutes into the second half, getting a low ball from freshman
Kelsey Douglas (Fort Walton Beach, Fla./Choctawhatchee HS) and giving the Argonauts a 4-0 lead.
Svenja Burkhardt (Bad Salzuflen, Germany/Gymnasium Heepen) was the final Argonaut to find the net, and she did so after a
Bri Young (Navarre, Fla./Navarre HS) corner kick.
UWF will host Mississippi College at 3 p.m. on Sunday afternoon in another GSC matchup.
