GSC STANDINGSWith the Gulf South Conference Championship Tournament set to begin on Tuesday, November 3, the Argonauts have put themselves in a good position with wins in five of their last six matches. UWF currently sits in fourth place among teams that are eligible for the GSC Tournament, with a 7-3 record and 21 points.
West Florida jumped West Georgia in the rankings after a 2-0 win against Mississippi College on Sunday afternoon. The Argos will host West Georgia on Saturday, October 31, for Senior Day and the team's regular-season finale at 1 p.m. Should standings remain the same, UWF would host West Georgia on November 3, just three days after playing the Wolves for the first time.
CONFERENCE RANKINGSThe UWF defense has allowed just four goals in the month of October, lowering the team's GAA to a conference-best 0.67 for the season. The team's average in GSC play has been even more remarkable, at 0.49 goals per game. The offense has improved statistically as well, jumping up to second in the GSC as the team averages 2.4 goals per game.
Individual rankings have stacked up as well, with
Daryl Bell (Sarasota, Fla./Southeast HS),
Kaley Ward (Saint Cloud, Fla./Tampa) and
Amber Pennybaker (Indianapolis, Ind./Tampa) have led the offense. All three players rank in the top 10 of the GSC in total goals, goals per game, total assists, assists per game, total points and points per game.
SCOUTING VALDOSTA STATEVSU has had trouble this season and the Blazers stand at 4-9-2 overall with a 3-6-1 conference record. Valdosta State was ranked 24th nationally to begin the season after winning the first Gulf South Conference title in program history last year.
The VSU offense has struggled this season, as the team has averaged less than a goal per game, which ranks 10th of 11 teams in the GSC. Madison Cutts has been the top Blazers scorer this year, with three goals and one assist, while Jade Reynolds and Jordan Humbert have each netted two goals and contributed with an assist.
The defense, however, has stood in the middle of the pack in conference, with a 1.53 GAA. Goalkeeper McCall Gardner has stayed in net all season for VSU and has recorded three shutouts on the season, against Delta State, Tampa and Alabama Huntsville. Shelby Jennings will also be a factor for the Blazers defense, as the senior was named to the preseason All-GSC team.
UWF is 4-1-2 all-time against Valdosta State.
