November 13, 2015 BOX SCORE MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The University of West Florida women's soccer team defeated Nova Southeastern University 1-0 in the first round of the NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Championship on Friday afternoon. With the win, UWF moves to 15-4-1 on the season and improves its record in the NCAA Tournament since 2005 to 18-7.
Daryl Bell (Sarasota, Fla./Southeast HS) scored the lone goal in the match, getting an assist from
Alisa Festagallo (Fort Pierce, Fla./Lincoln Park Academy) in the game's 16th minute. The goal counted for Bell's 15th of the season and Festagallo's third assist.
Bell recorded two of UWF's five shots on goal, with
Amber Pennybaker (Indianapolis, Ind./Tampa),
Emily Vogler (Lynn Haven, Fla./Mosley HS) and
Georgia Bailey (St. Catherine, Jamaica/St. Jago HS) each recorded one.
The UWF defense gave a strong showing against the top scoring offense in the Sunshine State Conference, as the Argos posted their 10th shutout of the season. UWF outshot NSU 14-6 on the day and outshot the Sharks 10-1 in the second half.
"It was collective defending and great goalkeeping," UWF head coach
Joe Bartlinski said. "Nova Southeastern is a very tough team, so everyone together worked hard. Vogler did a tremendous job, and that's why she's gotten a lot of the accolades she's gotten."
UWF keeper
Emily Grammer (Panama City, Fla./Mosley HS) posted a clean sheet in net, and she earned her third solo shutout of the season. Grammer's goals against average on the year stands at 0.69, and UWF's team GAA improved to 0.70 with the shutout victory.
West Florida faces Barry University in the South Region final on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET in Miami Shores.
