CLEVELAND, Tenn. – Before a crowd of 996 at Lee Soccer Field, the University of West Florida men's soccer team defeated the No. 3-seeded Flames of Lee University. With the win, the Argos move to the Gulf South Conference Semifinal, where they will take on No. 2 seed Alabama Huntsville on Friday on the campus of University of West Alabama. West Florida now stands at 11-5 on the season, while Lee ends its GSC tournament run with a 11-5-2 record.
UWF started off hot offensively, as Felipe Oliveira was able to collect a Marteinn Urbancic pass and put it over the Flames keeper's head in the 9th minute. Japhet Bitsindou quickly added a goal of his own in the 13th minute, as he picked up a miscleared ball from a Flames defender and put it in the back of the net.
Before the end of the half, Oliveira was able to record his second goal of the game and fifth of the season from a penalty kick in the 37th minute, sending the Argos into the halftime break with a 3-1 lead.
GSC Player of the Year David Perez was the lone goal scorer for Lee, as he tallied a first half goal and a goal in the 83rd minute to cut the Argos lead to one late in the game.
Lee pressured the West Florida net heavily in the second half, but defenders Zach Reynolds and Soren Yuhaschek played the entire 90 minutes and played key roles in preventing Flames attacks.
Andre Moreira got the win in net for UWF, improving his record to 6-3 on the season.
West Florida outshot the No.22-nationally ranked Flames 12-10, including owning a 7-2 margin in the first half.
Lee sees its GSC Tournament end run, while West Florida now looks towards a Friday semifinal match up against No. 2 seed Alabama Huntsville on Friday at 5:00 p.m.
