BOX SCORE PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida women's soccer team took a 4-1 win against Christian Brothers in the first round of the Gulf South Conference Tournament on Tuesday night. With the win, UWF advances to the tournament's semifinal round, where the team will play Lee University in Florence, Alabama, on Friday.
It did not take long for UWF to begin the scoring, as junior
Alisa Festagallo (Fort Pierce, Fla./Lincoln Park Academy) picked up her second goal of the season off a
Sara Helgadottir (Grindavík, Iceland/Menntaskólinn í Kópavogi) corner kick in the 16th minute.
Sofie Broch-Lips (Aarhus, Denmark/Marselisborg Gymnasium) padded the lead with her third goal of the year just four minutes later, which gave UWF a 2-0 lead that the team took into the half.
Kaley Ward (Saint Cloud, Fla./Tampa) was credited with her seventh assist of the season on the play, as she hit a cross into the box for Broch-Lips.
CBU picked up the first goal of the second half, but UWF quickly responded with a
Bri Young (Navarre, Fla./Navarre HS) free kick that found the net from 30 yards out.
Emily Vogler (Lynn Haven, Fla./Mosley HS) added her second goal of the year in the 82nd minute to give UWF the 4-1 lead it finished with.
Emily Grammer (Panama City, Fla./Mosley HS) picked up the win in goal for UWF, which improved her record to 6-2 on the season with a 0.46 GAA. West Florida has outscored its opponents 26-4 in the team's last nine matches, and six of those wins have been shutouts.
Friday's match against Lee will begin at 5 p.m.
