LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Florida men's soccer team fell to West Alabama on Sunday afternoon, as the Tigers defeated the Argos by a score of 2-0 and claimed the Gulf South Conference Championship. The No. 6 seeded Argos conclude its GSC Tournament run with a 12-6 record, a six-win improvement from its 2014 season, while No. 1 seed West Alabama claims its second consecutive title with a 10-6-2 record.
Both back lines played tough defense in the first half, as both teams would head into the break at a 0-0 tie. Goalkeeper Andre Moreira (Rio de Janiero, Brazil/Colegio de A a Z) made impressive stops in the last minute, as the Tigers pushed offensively to end the first half.
West Alabama was able to break the scoreless tie in the 72nd minute, as Jean Meyniel scored his fifth goal of the season off a feed from AJ Williams. Still pressuring offensively, UWA was able to add some cushion to its lead four minutes later off a goal from Harrison Roberts.
Moreira recorded four saves on the afternoon in his effort. Six West Florida players had one shot apiece.
West Alabama held an advantage in shots, 13-6, while West Florida owned a 5-2 advantage in corners.
The setback for West Florida ends its four-game winning streak and gives UWF an all-time record of 9-3 in GSC Championship games. West Florida has played in eight GSC title games in the last ten years, having claimed six titles in that span.
