Three Double-Doubles Lift UWF Past Mississippi College, 77-58

Preston, Coyne and Bobos play key roles in lifting Argos over .500

December 17, 2015

PENSACOLA, Fla. Kelly Preston, Katie Bobos and Alex Coyne all recorded double-doubles as the University of West Florida women's basketball was able to get over the .500 mark for the first time this season with a 77-58 win against Mississippi College on Thursday evening. With the victory, West Florida now possesses a 5-4 record and a 3-2 Gulf South Conference mark.

The last time the Argos were able to record three double-doubles in a single game, it happened at home on Dec. 17, 2012, when Jaymie Druding (14 points, 11 rebounds), Hanna Vette (26 points, 13 rebounds) and Emily Erland (19 points, 11 rebounds) all went for double-doubles against Miles en route to a 94-86 victory.

Turn the calendar to exactly three years later; the West Florida trio of Preston (17 points, 11 rebounds), Bobos (17 points, 11 rebounds) and Coyne (11 points, 11 assists) was able to accomplish the same feat in Thursday night's showing.

Another notable Argo performance came from Toni Brewer, who scored six points while collecting 10 rebounds. Jasmine Wigfall provided a solid contribution to the UWF offense, as the senior reached double figures for the fifth time this season with a 12-point performance.

West Florida used a strong first half showing to obtain a 40-29 halftime lead. Coyne dished an eye-catching five assists in the first quarter to set up the offense early, while UWF utilized six different players (Bobos, Brewer, Coyne, Wigfall, Belle Bistrow and Preston) who scored a minimum of five points in the first half. Preston led the way for UWF in scoring in the early stages, as the junior scored 10 points in the first half.

UWF was able to grab its largest lead of the game late in the fourth quarter, which was constructed by a 9-0 run beginning with 6:43 remaining. Before the run, the Argos held a nine-point lead at 62-53. After offensive contributions from Wigfall, Bobos, and Preston, UWF was able to expand its lead to 71-53 within a two and a half minute span. West Florida was able grab its highest lead of the game with 1:03 remaining in regulation when UWF led by 21 at 77-56.

MC (2-6, 0-5 GSC) now suffers its fifth consecutive setback after the loss. The Choctaws featured three scorers in double figures, led by center Carla Clemmons who tallied 15. MC's Toni Woods was able to grab a game-high 14 rebounds in the effort.

West Florida shot 42.1% from the field, while playing stingy defense and limiting the Choctaws to a 31.1% success rate from the field.

UWF's 32 field goals provided them with a new season-best, beating the previous mark of 27. In addition, the team total of 16 assists provides West Florida with a new season-best, while 11 steals also marks as a new season-high.

West Florida dominated MC down low, as the Argos were able to outscore the Choctaws 52-18 in the paint and win the rebounding battle 53-42.  West Florida cashed in on creating second chance opportunities, garnering 20 offensive rebounds and scoring 23-second-chance points. UWF was able to contain MC in both categories, as MC gathered 13 offensive rebounds while only being able to accumulate seven second-chance points.

UWF women's basketball now awaits a matchup with an undefeated Delta State (8-0, 5-0 GSC) team at home on Saturday. Game time is slated for 2:00 p.m., with the men's UWF-DSU contest following the conclusion of the women's game.
