December 5, 2015 BOX SCORE PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida women's basketball team defeated North Alabama 70-57 on Saturday afternoon in a Gulf South Conference contest. UWF improved to 3-3 on the season and 1-1 in the GSC.
The Argos were led by
Courtney Meyer (Onalaska, Wisc./Onalaska HS), who tied a school single-game record with 9 blocks in the game. Meyer also added 16 points on 6-10 shooting and grabbed 11 rebounds. Her nine blocks tie UWF all-time leading shot-blocker Melissa Nafzger's mark, who achieved the feat twice in her career, in 2005 and 2006.
Meyer's nine blocks are the most in Division II this season, and tie for the third-most in GSC single-game history. The Argos added four more blocks, and the team's 13 blocked shots tie for the fifth-most blocks for a team in GSC single-game history.
UWF got strong production outside of Meyer as well, as
Katie Bobos (Lowell, Ind./Lowell HS) led the team with 20 points and 15 rebounds on the afternoon. Reigning GSC Freshman of the Year
Toni Brewer (Huntsville, Ala./Sparkman HS) added 15 points and 12 rebounds.
West Florida dominated in the paint, as the Argos outrebounded the Lions 59-34 overall and picked up 24 offensive boards compared to UNA's 11. The Argonauts took a 13-point lead into halftime after outscoring North Alabama 24-9 in the first quarter. UWF also outscored the Lions 46-26 in the paint.
UWF led by as much as 18 and led for 37 of the game's 40 minutes.
The Argonauts will face Lee and Shorter on December 12 and 14 on the road. Game times are set for 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. CT, respectively.
