PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida softball team fell to the University of North Alabama 4-2 Sunday afternoon. The Argonauts (1-7, 0-3 GSC) drop their third straight Gulf South Conference game against the Lions while UNA improves to 10-1 (3-0 GSC) on the season.
"We're starting to get more comfortable at the plate," said head coach
Melissa Paul. "If we take away that first inning, we're right there in it and possible walking away with a different outcome today."
It was another slow start for the Argos, after North Alabama scored three runs in the first inning and it wasn't until the fourth inning when UWF got their first hit of the game. However, the Argos scored runs in the fourth and fifth to pull within one of UNA at 3-2.
The Lions would add one run in the top of the seventh to make it 4-2 and would take the victory after West Florida failed to produce a run with runners on second and third in the bottom of the seventh.
Senior
Aubrey Sumlin (Gulf Shores, Ala./Gulf Shores HS) led the way offensively for UWF after going 2-for-3 with two doubles. In the circle for UWF was
Rebecca Hein (Vestavia Hills, Ala./ Vestavia Hills HS) who, after a three run first inning, pitched five scoreless innings. She was credited with the loss, gave up eight hits, four earned runs, and struck out two batters.
West Florida will next host a non-conference match-up against Spring Hill College on Wednesday, Feb. 18 at the UWF Softball Complex.
