GAME NOTES: West Florida basketball prepares for final home games of 2014-15

Argos host West Georgia and West Alabama

PENSACOLA, Fla. - The University of West Florida men's basketball team will play its final home games of the 2014-15 season this weekend when they host the University of West Georgia and the University of West Alabama.

The Argonauts (7-18, 3-16 GSC) will face the West Georgia Wolves (17-7, 12-7 GSC) Thursday, Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. CT at the UWF Field House. The Wolves are currently fourth in the Gulf South Conference standings. UWF previously played UWG on Jan. 12 in Carrollton, Georgia where the Argos fell to the Wolves 82-65 in a game that saw Jason Laatsch (Birmingham, Ala./Briarwood Christian School) and Tyler Funk (Clarence, N.Y./Hillsborough CC) lead UWF with 17 points each.

West Florida will then take on the West Alabama Tigers (18-9, 13-6 GSC) at 4 p.m. CT on Saturday, Feb. 21 at the UWF Field House. The Tigers have clinched a GSC Tournament birth already this season and sit in second in the GSC standings. UWA defeated UWF earlier in the season on Jan. 10, 73-59 in a game that featured four different Argos scoring in double-digits.

Around the GSC

The Gulf South Conference men's basketball tournament field was decided last week as the last team in, North Alabama, joined Alabama Huntsville, West Alabama, Union, West Georgia, Shorter, Christian Brothers and Delta State.

The GSC Tournament seeding race is as tight as the league is the most-competitive in all of NCAA Division II. UWA is a team to be reckoned with. Winners of four-straight, the Tigers are now tied for the league lead at 13-6 with UAH. Close behind are two 12-7 teams, UU and UWG, followed by SU, CBU and DSU, which are all 11-8.

Now that the tournament field is set, teams are jockeying for top seeds with at least five squads within a game or two of the first-place teams. Three matchups will feature tourney-bound teams on Thursday. CBU will travel to UAH, UNA is at UU and SU hosts DSU. Saturday will tab another two games with UU at UAH and UNA at CBU.
