PENSACOLA, Fla. - The West Florida women's basketball team hosts its final two home games of the regular season Thursday and Saturday, Feb. 19 and 21, at the UWF Field House.
The Argonauts sit in second in the Gulf South Conference standings, and have clinched home court in the GSC Tournament quarterfinals. The top four seeds host the bottom four seeds in the first round of the GSC Tournament March 3. The semifinals and finals will be held in Birmingham, Ala. March 6-7.
UWF plays fourth-place West Georgia, who is still trying to clinch home court in the quarterfinals, Thursday at 5 p.m. and West Alabama, who is tied for eighth and trying to clinch a berth in the tournament, Saturday at 2 p.m.
UWF ranked No. 5 in NCAA Regional Rankings
UWF ranked No. 5 in the first set of NCAA Regional Rankings announced by the NCAA Selection Committee. The three champions of the Gulf South, Sunshine State and Southern Intercollegiate Athletics conferences receive automatic bids, and five additional at-large bids are awarded based on the rankings. The top seed selected in the rankings is given the opportunity to host the NCAA South Regional Tournament.
The rankings (and in-region record) are:
1.Union (18-3) - 2. Florida Tech (17-3) - 3. Rollins (15-2) - 4. Nova Southeastern (18-5) - 5. West Florida (16-5) - 6. Kentucky State (16-4) - 7. Eckerd (13-6) - 8. Benedict (17-5) - 9. Delta State (15-8) - 10. Tampa (11-5)
GSC Seeding ScenariosWith three games left in the regular season, UWF needs two wins, one win and one Delta State loss, or two DSU losses to clinch the No. 2 seed.
In order to receive the No. 1 seed, UWF would have to win three games and need at least two Union losses to force a tiebreaker for the No. 1 seed. UWF would win the tiebreaker because it split its regular-season contests against the Bulldogs and has a better record against third-place Delta State, assuming DSU finished third.
UWF would need three wins and three Union losses in order to clinch the No. 1 seed without a tiebreaker.
