PENSACOLA, Fla. – The West Florida women's basketball team dropped a home game to West Georgia 60-55 Thursday night at the UWF Field House.
The Argonauts (17-7, 14-6) shot 33.3 percent from the field and 44.4 percent from the free throw line in their second loss to the Wolves (17-9, 12-8) this season. UWF is now tied for second with Delta State in the Gulf South Conference standings, while UWG remains in fourth among teams eligible for the postseason. The Argos hold the tiebreaker over DSU for GSC Tournament seeding.
"We knew it was going to be a physical game," UWF coach
Stephanie Lawrence Yelton said. "It was physical the first time we played them at their place. Every game is getting more and more physical.
"We went through stretches where we didn't make plays. We persevered and stayed in the game. The biggest stat that we didn't complete tonight, that we'd been doing well in, was free throw shooting. That just killed us tonight."
UWF trailed 29-23 at the break but tied the game 33-33 after going on a 10-4 run to begin the second half. But UWG took the lead and held off the Argos, who were down by more than two possessions just once in the final 13 minutes of the game.
Katie Bobos (Lowell, Ind./Lowell HS) led UWF with 12 points and 10 rebounds, and
Kyla Muhammad (Pensacola, Fla./Daytona State) scored 10 points with three assists.
"Every game is important down the stretch," Yelton said. "We've had a target on our backs all season. People are coming in and we get their best effort. We just need to elevate our play to match that energy and that intensity."
UWF hosts West Alabama in its second-to-last game of the season on senior day Saturday, Feb. 21, at 2 p.m.
