PENSACOLA, Fla. – The No. 25 West Florida baseball team swept Christian Brothers after a 7-0 Saturday victory in the third game of a Gulf South Conference series at Jim Spooner Field.
The Argonauts (11-5, 5-4 GSC) were led by
Reed Bright's (Pelham, Ala./Snead State CC) complete game shutout of the Buccaneers (6-7, 2-4). The junior allowed five hits and struck out eight.
"I was really proud of the pitching this weekend," UWF coach
Mike Jeffcoat said. "
Reed Bright threw an outstanding game for us, giving us all nine innings. The offense has been coming around, executing and moving guys over. They're doing things they need to do to get those runs in."
Chase Kiefer (Pensacola, Fla./Pensacola Catholic HS) led off the first with a single, stole a base and then came around to score on a sac fly later in the inning to give UWF an early 1-0 lead.
The Argos added four more in the fifth on five hits including a
Jordan Stark (Flowood, Miss./Jones County CC) two-run double and a
Ledarious Clark (Meridian, Miss./East Mississippi CC) RBI triple to lead 5-0. The Argos tacked on two more in the eighth before completing the 7-0 victory.
"It was an all-around good series," Jeffcoat said. "I saw a lot of improvement from last weekend. Hopefully we can use that momentum going on the road for the next five games."
UWF travels to Columbus State Tuesday, March 3, to begin a two-game midweek series against the Cougars.
