PENSACOLA, Fla. – It was the same story but a different day as the West Florida women's basketball team came back to tie a game against Delta State in the final seconds of regulation before winning in overtime.
Freshman
Courtney Meyer (Onalaska, Wisc./Onaslaska HS) scored a career-high 13 points including two free throws with 1.7 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game 51-51 and force overtime Thursday night at the UWF Field House. The Argonauts (15-5, 12-4) went on to defeat the Lady Statesmen (12-8, 10-6) 65-62 and remain in sole possession of second place in the Gulf South Conference.
In the first meeting between the teams Dec. 20, 2014, UWF tied DSU on a
Brianna Williams (Minneapolis, Minn./North Dakota) last-second layup before defeating the Lady Statesmen 73-69 in overtime.
"This was a major accomplishment for us," UWF coach
Stephanie Lawrence Yelton said. "It's a foundation piece to be able to beat people twice in our conference. Delta State is a storied program. They're legendary in this conference and in women's basketball."
It was the first time an Argo women's basketball team defeated DSU twice during the regular season. The six-time national champion Lady Statesmen are the only Division II women's program with more than 1,000 wins and the only GSC school with more than 700 conference wins.
UWF trailed 27-20 at the break after DSU shot 52.2 percent from the field in the first half. After trailing by as much as nine in the second half, UWF took its first lead 44-43 with 5:31 remaining. The teams exchanged leads three times and tied four times during the final minutes of regulation.
"We were able to come out after halftime and cut into the lead," Yelton said. "We stayed poised and confident. We made big shots and big defensive plays down the stretch. We had to take it into overtime, and our fans were phenomenal in helping us get this win."
Jasmine Wigfall (Orlando, Fla./Timber Creek HS) led UWF with 15 points, including a pair of free throws in the final second of overtime to extend UWF's lead to three.
Alyssa Dupree-Moore (Darlington, Fla./Northwest Florida State) also set a career-high with 10 points.
Last season, UWF split the regular-season series with DSU before defeating the Lady Statesmen in the GSC Final to win the Argonauts' first GSC championship in school history.
UWF hosts Mississippi College Saturday, Feb. 5, at 2 p.m. at the UWF Field House.
