Game Notes: UWF begins play in NCAA Regional

JACKSON, Tenn. - The West Florida women's basketball team advanced to the NCAA Tournament in back-to-back seasons for the first time in school history after earning an at-large bid to the NCAA South Regional.

No. 4 seed UWF (19-8) plays No. 5 seed Benedict (23-6) in Jackson, Tenn. March 13 at 7:30 p.m. The winner will play the winner of No. 1 seed Union and No. 8 seed Albany State March 14 at 7:30 p.m.

UWF vs. Benedict

UWF and Benedict will meet for the first time in school history Friday. UWF received four votes in the most recent Women's Basketball Coaches Association national poll, and Benedict received seven votes.

The Argonauts earned the No. 2 seed in the Gulf South Conference Tournament before losing in the GSC Quarterfinals. Benedict was the Southern Intercollegiate East Division champions and finished runner-up at the SIAC Tournament.

The Argos and the Tigers play the final game of the day in Fred DeLay Gymnasium. UWF is 1-2 in school history at the tournament site, with a win last year at Union but a loss this year.

Last season, No. 7 seeded UWF lost to No. 2 seed Tampa in the NCAA South Regional Quarterfinal, and No. 8 seed Benedict lost to No. 1 seed Nova Southeastern in the NCAA South Regional Quarterfinal.

UWF was the 2013-14 GSC Champion and Benedict was the 2013-14 SIAC Champion.

With a win, UWF would play either Union, the 2014-15 GSC Champion, or Albany State, the 2014-15 SIAC Champion.
