UWF softball splits doubleheader with Union (Tenn.)

Argos fall to Lady Bulldogs 4-0 in game one, win 10-2 in game two

PENSACOLA, Fla.  – The University of West Florida softball team split a doubleheader with Gulf South Conference member Union (Tenn.) University Saturday afternoon. The Argonauts (5-15, 3-8 GSC) fell to the Lady Bulldogs 4-0 in the first game, but then rallied back in game two to defeat UU 10-2 in six innings.

"It was a tough game one for us," said head coach Melissa Paul. "But we made some adjustments in game two that threw their pitcher off her game and ended up walking away with a win."

The Argos were held without a hit in game one, but were led in game two by Jenna Belser (Chipley, Fal./Holmes County HS) who went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI.

Game 1: West Florida 0, Union (Tenn.) 4

It was a tough day for West Florida's batters in the first game as UWF failed to produce a hit on pitcher Kelly Robey. The Argos reached base only twice in the game after Belser and Kaylen Rowell (Pensacola, Fla./Tate HS) each drew walks in the game.

In the circle for UWF was sophomore Rebecca Hein (Vestavia Hills, Ala./Vestavia Hills HS) who went all seven innings and gave up four runs on seven hits and struck out five batters.

Game 2: West Florida 10, Union (Tenn.) 2 (6 Innings)

It was another slow start for West Florida at the beginning of game two for the Argos. The Lady Bulldogs were the first to put runs on the scoreboard after scoring two runs in the third inning. However, UWF would explode offensively in the fifth and sixth innings after scoring six runs in the fifth and four in the sixth to earn the 10-2 victory.

Five different Argos recorded at least one RBI in the game while also having five Argos record multiple hits. Behind Belser's team leading three RBI, senior Lou Barnard (Apopka, Fla./Apopka HS) and junior Kayla Rosario (Pensacola, Fla./Pensacola State College) each batted in two runs for West Florida.

UWF was led in the circle by Kalyn Chapman (Boonville, Ind./Wabash Valley JC) who, despite a two run third inning, pitched five scoreless innings. She gave up seven hits, no earned runs, and struck out two batters with only one walk.

"Chapman had a great day for us today," continued Paul. "She was able to throw her game and get some outs despite some defensive miscues to help close out the game for us."

West Florida and Union (Tenn.) will conclude the three game series with the final game on Sunday, March 8 at 1 p.m. CT.
