Argos total 18 hits in 10-2 win over Union in GSC baseball series finale

UWF sweeps series and improves to 14-7 overall and 8-4 in GSC play

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The No. 26 West Florida baseball team totaled 18 hits in a 10-2 win over Union (Tenn.) on Sunday to sweep the weekend series at Jim Spooner Field. The Argonauts improved to 14-7 overall and 8-4 in Gulf South Conference play, while the Bulldogs fell to 3-15, 2-10.

"It was great to get a sweep in conference play," said UWF head coach Mike Jeffcoat. "Today our guys played strong. We had a purpose and we finished the game. We swung the bats and pitched pretty well."

Second baseman Nic Strasser (Orlando, Fla.) had another impressive day at the plate, hitting 4-for-5 with a double, one run and one RBI. The freshman improved his team-leading batting average to .431, and he now ranks fifth in the GSC in that category.

Three Argonauts posted three-hit games in addition to Strasser. Kyle Hamner (Maitland, Fla.) hit 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs, Sean Plunkett (Ocala, Fla.) was 3-for-4 with one run and one RBI, and Jimmy Redovian (Franklin, Tenn.) was 3-for-3 with a double, one run and three RBIs.

Brandon Nagem (Pensacola, Fla.) was the starting pitcher for UWF and picked up the win to improve to 4-0 on the year. The left-hander held Union to two runs in 6.1 innings while striking out six batters. Kevin Peters (Orlando, Fla.) and Josh McLaney (Laurel Hill, Fla.) pitched the final 2.2 innings to finish the win.

Union starting pitcher Skyler Harrison (1-3) was credited with the loss after allowing nine runs, seven earned, in 5.1 innings.

The weekend series was originally scheduled to take place on the road at Union in Jackson, Tenn., but the weather forecast resulted in changing the location to Pensacola.

"We were fortunate to be able to play at home this weekend with great weather," Jeffcoat explained. "We're thankful we were able to work this out with Union and GSC Commissioner Matt Wilson. With the weather, a lot of series are being moved. We know it was tough on them having to travel down here and getting in late."

SCHEDULE ALERT
UWF was originally scheduled to face NAIA opponent Mobile at home on Wednesday, March 11, but due to rain in the forecast that game has been moved to Tuesday, March 31 at 6 p.m.

The Argonauts' next game will now be at home against No. 11 Alabama Huntsville on March 14-15. The doubleheader on Saturday, March 14 will start at 2 p.m., and the single game on Sunday, March 15 is scheduled for first pitch at 1 p.m.
