West Florida improves to 6-3 on the year against nationally ranked opponents

RESULTS

PENSACOLA, Fla. –
The No. 8-ranked University of West Florida women's tennis team avenged a regular-season loss to No. 8 Hawaii Pacific by defeating the Sharks 7-2 at home on Wednesday at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex.  West Florida (18-3, 9-0 GSC) improves to 6-3 against nationally ranked opponents en route to the team's fifth straight win.

"It's always good to get big wins this late in the season," head coach Derrick Racine said. "Today we came out on fire and took two of the three doubles and then we had really good results all the way down our (singles) lineup."

West Florida's No. 16-ranked doubles team of seniors Laure-Eline Faure (Toulouse, France) and Monika Kochanova (Bratislava, Slovakia) defeated Hawaii Pacific's No. 11-ranked doubles team of Kristyna Hancarova and Nicole Hoynaski 8-5 at number one doubles en route to earning their first win over a nationally ranked opponent this year.

Junior Nina Bubelova (Povazska Bystrica, Slovakia) and senior Fernanda Amaral (Curitiba, Brazil) won at number two doubles 8-5 while junior Katarina Dikosavljevic (Queensland, Australia) and sophomore Lisa May (Oviedo, Fla.) fell at number three doubles by a score of 4-8.

"I think the key today was the doubles," Racine said. "We came out and we believed that we could take two out of the three doubles and we did that today. We feel really good heading into the later part of our season."

Faure defeated No. 16 Hancarova at number one singles 6-4, 4-6, 10-5 and improves to 3-2 against nationally ranked opponents on the year.

No. 18 Kochanova fell at number two singles 6-7, 1-6 and drops to 6-3 on the year against regionally tanked opponents.

Dikosavljevic won at number three singles 2-6, 6-0, 6-0 while Bubelova won at number four singles 7-6, 6-3.

Amaral won 6-3, 6-1 at number five singles while junior Sarai Flores (Mexico City, Mexico) won 6-3, 6-2 at number six singles.

West Florida will next face No. 26 Concordia (N.Y.) on Thursday, April 2 at 1:30 p.m. CT. UWF will then face Mississippi College on Saturday, April 4 at 9 a.m. CT before facing Georgia Gwinnett at 3 p.m. CT later that day.
