UWF women's tennis team wins program's 15th GSC championship

West Florida women’s tennis team sweeps Shorter en route to fifth straight conference championship

RESULTS

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The top-seeded University of West Florida women's tennis team swept the No. 2 seed Shorter 6-0 on Sunday en route to the program's fifth consecutive, and 15th overall Gulf South Conference Tournament championship. West Florida (24-3, 10-0 GSC) extends its winning streak against Gulf South Conference opponents to 56 after reaching the conference championship match for the 21st straight season.
 
"We ran into a very good team today in Shorter," head coach Derrick Racine. "The doubles matches were all very close but after we won the doubles matches we carried that momentum into singles play. It was great to see Laure-Eline (Faure) clinch the championship for us."
 
The University of West Florida now as 82 conference titles and has won three conference titles during the 2014-15 academic year.
 
West Florida's No. 10-ranked doubles team of seniors Laure-Eline Faure (Toulouse, France) and Monika Kochanova (Bratislava, Slovakia) defeated Agnes Brun and Ornella Frere at number one doubles 8-6. With the win, Kochanova earns her 60th career doubles victory as an Argonaut, and her 86th overall in her collegiate career.
 
Senior Fernanda Amaral (Curitiba, Brazil) and junior Nina Bubelova (Povazska Bystrica, Slovakia) defeated Aurore Beltrando and Samya El Hsissen 8-2 at number two doubles en route to their ninth straight doubles victory.
 
Junior Katarina Dikosavljevic (Queensland, Australia) and junior Giovana Patitucci (Sao Paulo, Brazil) defeated Daniela Chipe and Sicquena Sinclair at number three doubles 8-4.
 
Faure clinched the championship by defeating Brun at number one singles 6-2, 6-2 en route to her 30th career victory as an Argonaut.
 
Bubelova defeated El Hsissen 6-0, 6-0 at number four singles while junior Sarai Flores (Mexico City, Mexico) defeated Sinclair at number six singles by a score of 6-2, 6-2.
 
West Florida came in at number two in the latest NCAA South Region rankings. The top two teams in the regional rankings at the end of the year will host the NCAA South Regional Championships.
