COLUMBUS, Ga. – The University of West Florida women's soccer team picked up a 2-1 win in its season-opening game against Tusculum in the CSU Collegiate Invitational. UWF was led offensively by newcomer Amber Pennybaker, who recorded a goal and an assist.
Senior forward Amber Pennybaker (Indianapolis, Ind./Tampa) led the offensive attack for West Florida early in the game, working around two defenders and the goalkeeper for a go-ahead goal in the 10th minute. Tusculum scored in the 38th minute and evened the score at 1-1 going into the half.
West Florida started the second half with an aggressive attack, getting shots from Sara Helgadottir (Grindav'k, Iceland/Menntask'linn ' K'pavogi), Daryl Bell (Sarasota, Fla./Southeast HS), Sofie Broch-Lips (Aarhus, Denmark/Marselisborg Gymnasium) and Kaley Ward (Saint Cloud, Fla./Tampa) in the first 10 minutes of the period.
Late in the game, Taylor Burkhart (Pace, Fla./Pace HS) scored her first goal of the season to give UWF the lead for good with just over nine minutes remaining. Pennybaker and Devany Brennan (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem HS) were credited with their first assists of the season on Burkhart's goal.
UWF will finish its opening weekend in Columbus against Lynn University on Sunday, September 6, at 2 p.m.
