BOX SCORE (PDF) January 30, 2016 PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida women's basketball team fell to Shorter 68-59 to split the season series with the Lady Hawks on Saturday. Sophomore
Courtney Meyer led UWF on both sides of the court, grabbing a career-best 18 rebounds and tallying 15 points and 6 blocks, which led all players.
Shorter jumped out to a quick lead and held an 11-8 advantage over UWF halfway through the first quarter. UWF was plagued by turnovers in the first 20 minutes and stood at a six- to eight-point deficit for much of the first half.
Two free throws from
Katie Bobos capped off a 12-6 run for UWF as the half came to a close, and West Florida trailed 33-29. Shorter maintained a four-point lead for most of the second half, despite shooting just 40 percent from the field.
Kelly Preston and
Katie O'Neal reached double-digit points, as Preston put in 14 on 7-9 shooting and O'Neal tied her career high with 10.
Alex Coyne chipped in with 11 assists on the afternoon, marking the third time this season she's reached double digits.
UWF controlled the boards overall, outrebounding the Lady Hawks 41-29, but Shorter held a slight advantage down low with 38 points in the paint compared to UWF's 36. The biggest advantage for Shorter came on turnovers, as the Lady Hawks scored 23 points off turnovers and UWF was held to just 13.
West Florida will head to Delta State on February 4 for a Gulf South Conference game set to begin at 5:30 p.m.
