Men's Basketball Lands on Top in 73-67 Contest Against Fort Valley State

16-2 run early in second half makes room for UWF’s second consecutive win to open season

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – Austin Somerfield, Deangelo Legrier and Marvin Jones all posted double-digit point totals to help give the University of West Florida men's basketball team its second consecutive win to open the 2016-17 in a 73-67 performance over Fort Valley State.

 

Fort Valley State (0-2) lead by as many as 13 in the first half, as the Wildcats jumped out to a 21-8 lead to start the contest. UWF responded by using a 16-4 run to cut FVSU's lead to just one at 25-24. From that point, UWF would take a 36-30 lead into the half largely in thanks to six points from Legrier.

 

Somerfield posted 17 first-half points, and the Argonauts outrebounded FVSU 26-19. Somerfield led all players in the first half with six rebounds.

 

UWF (2-0) came out firing to start the second half, going on a 16-2 run over 5:02 early in the second half to gain a 19-point lead at 54-35. Fort Valley responded with a 10-0 run, but the Wildcats were never able to surmount UWF's lead as the Argonauts held on for a 73-67 win. West Florida as a whole shot 48% in the second half.

 

Jones was the focal point of the UWF offense in the second half, scoring 10 points from going 4-of-5 shooting in the second half. Jones also converted on both of his three-point attempts to help West Florida post a 50% three-point field goal percentage in the second half.

 

UWF won the battle down low, outscoring FVSU 36-28 in the paint.

 

Somerfield led all players in the game with 19 points while recording a team-high eight rebounds. Legrier and Jones finished with 18 points and 12 points, respectively, while Rashaan Benson recorded a game-high six assists.


West Florida now awaits its home opener, which is slated for a 6:00 p.m. start on Saturday against Auburn-Montgomery.
