Six Argos Go For Double Digits in 109-67 Win Over Albany State

West Florida scores 100 points for first time since 2014 in the win

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The University of West Florida women's basketball team came out in full force in its second game of the year, taking a huge win over Albany State to wrap up the season's opening weekend. UWF's 109 points in the game are the third-most in school history, and the 109-67 win marked the first 100-point affair for UWF since it took a 100-78 win over Alabama Huntsville in January of 2014.

"Our team played extremely well today," head coach Stephanie Lawrence Yelton said. "Albany State threw out every defense in their arsenal, and we were able to adjust offensively and make plays. Toni Brewer was a huge factor on the boards again, while Imani Mulmore's tough play on both ends of the floor helped raise the level of our overall play."

The UWF offense scored the most points it has since 1994, when the Argonauts set single-game school records in matchups against Stillman (125 points) and Concordia-Selma (111 points).

Brewer picked up another double-double, going for 16 points and 13 rebounds, while the freshman Mulmore scored a team-best 20 points on 6-of-9 shooting. The rookie also added five rebounds and an assist and went 8-9 at the charity stripe. Junior transfer Shaniqua Magee put up 15 points, also going 6-of-9 from the field while adding a pair of 3-pointers.

Mulmore wasn't the only one who strived at the free throw line, as Courtney Meyer scored all nine of her points from the stripe and UWF shot 80 percent. The Argos connected on 45 percent of their tries from beyond the arc, as six players hit at least one 3, and the team shot 51 percent overall from the floor. All 11 Argonauts who played scored at least two points, and six players scored in double digits.

West Florida outplayed ASU in every facet of the game, with the exception of points in the paint, where both teams tallied 30 points. UWF outrebounded the Golden Rams 49-36, held ASU to just 13 second-chance points while scoring 16, and picked up 27 points off turnovers while holding the opposition to just 12. UWF's depth was showcased on Saturday as well, as the Argonaut bench totaled 42 points.

UWF took a 2-0 lead just 26 seconds into the game and never trailed. The Argos jumped out to a 29-14 lead after the first quarter led 54-30 at halftime. Albany State kept things tight in the third quarter, falling in that 10-minute period 21-20, before UWF turned up the heat in the fourth quarter and clinched the 42-point win.

"We were great at the free throw line and shooting from the floor, but I really feel like our offense caught momentum from our defensive effort," Yelton said. "It's not every day that every player gets a chance to play and scores. We had that kind effort today."

West Florida has off until next Saturday, when the Argonauts visit Montevallo on November 19. The team opens its home schedule on Tuesday, November 22 against Spring Hill at 5:30 p.m.
