PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida men's basketball team tipped off its 2016-17 campaign against NCAA Division I Louisiana in an exhibition and fell 94-72 to the Ragin' Cajuns at the Backham Coliseum on Thursday night.
West Florida posted a 47.1 field goal percentage in the second half after facing a 43-27 deficit at the half. In the 45-point second half,
Austin Somerfield led the team with 10 points, going 3-for-4 from the field and went a perfect 4-for-4 from the free-throw line. UWF also outrebounded Louisiana in the second half by a 20-17 margin in the second half, led by
Darryl Tucker who had six boards in the second half.
Deangelo Legrier recorded a team-high 16 points in the exhibition. Legrier's 16 points was the second most amongst all players in the contest, falling only short of Louisiana's Bryce Washington's 25 points.
Rashaan Benson was also in double figures with 14 points, and dished out a game-high five assists in the contest. Somerfield concluded the game with 12 points.
UWF was limited from outside-range, going 0-for-10 in the first half before converting on 3 of 15 chances in the second half.
Jason Laatsch went 2-for-4 from beyond the arc to lead the long-distance shooting effort for the Argonauts.
Tucker's eight rebounds in the contest led the team, and was the second highest amongst players in the game. Louisiana's Washington had another game-high with 12 rebounds to complete his double-double performance.
UWF remains idle until opening Division II play against Albany State on Friday, Nov. 11.
