PENSACOLA, Fla. – The No. 14-ranked University of West Florida swimming and diving team will visit Ft. Myers, Florida, for a quad meet against Florida Southern, Florida State and Florida Gulf Coast on Friday and Saturday. The swimming team is 2-2 after big wins against Loyola New Orleans and Keiser, and the divers are coming off a strong performance at Clemson last weekend.
The team saw senior
Theresa Michalak (4:28.38) and junior
Madeline Pitt (4:30.50) record the two fastest DII times in the country in the 400 IM at the home meet in mid-October. Both of those times are good for "B"-cuts for the NCAA Championships.
Michalak added to her efforts in the meet with a 50 Free time of 23.68, which ranks second in the UWF all-time record book.
In addition to her strong performance in the 400 IM, Pitt put together a good race in the 200 Free, where she recorded a 1:57.38 and edged out Loyola's Paige Carter, who qualified for NAIA nationals in the first meet of her career.
Nicole Machado took both events in the backstroke, with a 59.99 in the 100 and a 2:07.26 in the 200, which paced the field by six seconds.
Against Clemson last Saturday, senior
Monica Amaral took the individual title in the 3-meter diving event and finished third in the 1-meter. Amaral has won every 3-meter event she has been in since the 2015 NCAA Championships roughly 19 months ago. In the 1-meter, all five UWF divers defeated at least one D1 competitor.
Reigning Sunshine State Conference champion Florida Southern enters the weekend with the No. 25 women's team in DII. The Mocs women finished 15th in the NCAA Championships in March and will return at least two members of last year's All-American relay teams in the 400 Medley, 800 Free and 400 Free. UWF defeated FSC last year in the same meet, taking a 210-152 victory.
Florida State ranked No. 29 in the latest CSCAA National Coaches Poll, released on October 26. The Seminoles will be well-rested and are hitting the road for the first time this season, after falling to No. 18 Florida at home on October 13.
Florida Gulf Coast, on the other hand, had a remarkably busy October, after finishing fourth in the FGCU Classic early in the month before defeating North Florida 159-95 at home the following week. From there, the Eagles took a trip to sunny Los Angeles, California, where they went 4-2 against West Coast competition, including USC, UCLA and UC Davis.
The meet will begin with an evening session at 5 p.m. ET on Friday and will conclude with a morning session on 10 ET on Saturday.
