PENSACOLA, Fla. - The University of West Florida men's basketball team now owns the best overall record in the Gulf South Conference after a career night from
Deangelo Legrier lifted the Argonauts to an 86-75 win over Spring Hill on Wednesday night.
The Argos now have its second 5-0 start since the 1997-98 squad recorded a program-best nine wins to start the season. UWF also started 5-0 in 2012-13. UWF has already eclipsed its road win total from a season ago with its third road win of the year.
UWF (5-0) set the tone for the contest early on, going on a 7-0 run and scoring on each of their first three possessions of the game. West Florida carried that momentum with them for the remainder of the half, with the Argos taking a 19-point, 43-24 lead into halftime.
West Florida held SHC (0-9) to a dismal 25.7% field goal percentage, including a miniscule success rate of 12.5% from three-point land. Offensively, the Argonauts were led by Legrier's 14 first-half points, which included shooting a perfect 5-for-5 from the field and 4-for-4 from the free-throw line.
The Argonauts showed no signs of slowing down in the early stages of the second half, going on a 10-3 run to open the half to gain its largest lead of the game at 24. During the early second-half run,
Jason Laatsch took over by providing UWF with six points and an assist in the span of 1:46.
Rashaan Benson was a catalyst for the offense in the second half, providing the team with 17 points in the final 20 minutes. West Florida shot 52% in the second half, and outrebounded the Badgers 16-9 after being topped on the glass 28-18 in the first half.
Legrier finished the contest with a new career-high 23 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Legrier's 23 points is the most by any Argonaut this season.
Benson finished with 21 points, giving the sophomore the third 20-point game of his career.
West Florida utilized season-highs in points scored (86), field goal percentage (47.5), free throws made (27) and fewest turnovers (8). UWF also dominated the battle in the paint, outscoring SHC 42-20 inside.
UWF takes a 12-day hiatus until opening GSC play on December 12, when it puts its perfect record on the line against Valdosta State at home on Dec. 12 at 7:30 p.m.
