UWF Cruises Past West Alabama to Earn Spot in GSC Title Game

Vogler scores twice, Helgadottir records two assists

PENSACOLA, Fla. Emily Vogler's brace and Sara Helgadottir's two-assist day led the University of West Florida women's soccer team past 4-seed West Alabama with a 5-0 win in the Gulf South Conference Championship semifinal round on Friday. The Argonauts improved to 15-4 with the victory and posted their 14th shutout of the season.

Vogler found the goal twice off a corner kick from Helgadottir, giving Vogler her ninth and tenth goals of the season. Vogler scored twice against UWA in the regular season, meaning the senior from nearby Lynn Haven, Florida, scored four of her 10 goals against the Tigers.

Helgadottir's two assists give her 14 on the year, which ties her with teammate Marjorie Boilesen for the team, conference and South Region lead in assists, and those 14 helpers rank second in Division II.

With another shutout – it's 14th of the year – West Florida moved into third place in the GSC single-season record books in that category. The Argos have allowed just one goal in their last 10 games, a stretch that dates back to an October 2 matchup against West Alabama.

Vogler and Helgadottir connected for the first time in the 33rd minute, when Vogler crushed a header that got by UWA keeper Issy Foster to put UWF up 1-0. The gang got back together in the 58th minute with nearly the same exact situation, and that goal stretched the UWF lead to 4-0.

Elizabeth Vickers scored the first goal of her career after Kaley Ward used her left foot to find the sophomore in the box. It was Ward's third assist of the year. Boilesen connected on a penalty kick to put the score at 3-0 after she drew a foul at the end line right next to the West Alabama goal after Foster made an excellent save.

The final goal of the night came on a pass from Taylor Burkhart that found freshman Camille King, who converted with a shot on the near post.

UWF allowed just three shots on the day, all of which came in the second half. Like in the regular season, the Argonauts held UWA freshman TeMia Pride without a shot. Entering the tournament, Pride ranked third in the league in shots per game and second in total goals, with 13.

West Florida will play 3-seed Mississippi College on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the UWF Soccer Complex. The Choctaws got past 2-seed Lee on Friday night after a 0-0 draw and advancing on penalty kicks.
