PENSACOLA, Fla. – The UWF men's basketball team will begin Gulf South Conference action on Monday night against Valdosta State. First tip from the UWF Field House is set for 7:30 p.m.
Later this week, UWF will travel to Tennessee to take on Union and Christian Brothers. Tonight's UWF-VSU contest starts a stretch of 20 consecutive conference games for the Argonauts.
SUCCESSFUL START
- For the second time in 19 years, UWF men's basketball has started its season with five consecutive wins. West Florida strung together a program record nine wins in a row to begin the 1997-98 campaign. UWF also started 5-0 in 2012-13.
NATIONAL RECOGNITION
As one of 16 remaining undefeated teams in NCAA Division II, UWF has received votes in the National Assocation of Basketball Coaches poll and Division II Sports Information Directors of America national polls.
- UWF is the 33rd team receiving votes in the D2SIDA poll, while they are the 35th team garnering votes in the NABC rankings.
CONFERENCE'S BEST
- West Florida currently ranks at the top in the GSC in offensive rebounds per game (15.00), which is also 12th most in Division II.
- UWF's 12.6 scoring margin is the best in the GSC and 45th best in the nation.
- West Florida owns a 3.8 turnover margin to lead the GSC.
- UWF is also second in the conference in turnovers forced per game (17.2) and scoring defense (64.4 points allowed per game). UWF's 64.4 opponent's points per game is also the 20th best in DII.
LEGRIER'S CAREER NIGHT
- Senior forward
Deangelo Legrier recorded a career-high 23 points against Spring Hill on Nov. 30, leading UWF to a 86-75 win over SHC.
- In the first half, Legrier shot a perfect 5-5 from the field and went 4-4 fromt he free throw line to give the Orlando native 14 first-half points.
- Legrier also set game-highs with eight rebounds and four blocks. His four blocks against SHC is a new single-game high for the Argonauts this year.
GSC MUSCLE
- To exemplify the strength of the GSC, in early-season non-conference contests the 12 teams combined to go 49-14 (.773) against non-conference opponents.
- UWF was one of three teams (Shorter, Mississippi College) to post undefeated records against early-season non-conference opponents. With Shorter and MC each dropping their first conference game of the season, UWF is the last remaining undefeated team in the conference.
AWAY FROM THE FIELD HOUSE
- With three wins away from the UWF Field House this year (split between two road, one neutral) UWF has eclipsed its win total from 2015-16 in games away from the UWF Field House.
- With a 2-0 record in away games this year, it is the first time that UWF has opened its road schedule with back-to-back wins since the 2009-10 season. UWF topped Flagler and Colombus State to open 2-0 in road games that year.
- In the three games away from Pensacola this year, UWF is besting its opponents by an average of 8.7 points per game. Four players are averaging double figures in those three games, including
Deangelo Legrier (14.3),
Austin Somerfield (13.7),
Rashaan Benson (12.3) and
Jason Laatsch (12.0).

Deangelo Legrier currently ranks fourth in the GSC and 51st in the nation with 1.80 blocks per game.
- Legrier now has 84 career blocks, which is the fourth most in program history. Blocks became an officially recorded stat prior to the 1994 season.

ALL-TIME AGAINST VALDOSTA STATE
- UWF is 20-26 against the Blazers and are looking to snap a four-game losing streak against the Blazers. The last win for the Argonauts against VSU came on Feb. 17, 2014 where UWF took a 94-82 decision at home.
- UWF had five players in double figures in that win, including
Mario Stramaglia who had 10 and converted on 2-3 three-point attempts and swished all four of his free throws.
ALL-TIME AGAINST UNION
- UWF sports a 3-5 record all-time against the Bulldogs, who have started its 2016-17 campaign with a 5-2 record. Union dropped its conference opener against Christian Brothers 89-68.
- The Argos and Bulldogs split last year's series, with the home team winning each contest. UWF took a 88-79 overtime win against the Bulldogs on Feb. 13, 2016, which was led by
Mario Stramaglia (career-high 26 points, 8 rebounds, career-high 7-12 3-pt) and
Austin Somerfield (20 points, 9 rebounds)
ALL-TIME AGAINST CBU
- UWF has a 3-10 all-time record against CBU, but has taken one win from the Bucs in each of the past two seasons.
- UWF and CBU split last year's series, as again the home team took the victory in each contest. UWF won its most decisive conference victory at home against CBU, taking a 16-point, 75-59 decision over the Bucs.

Austin Somerfield led the way with a double double (19 points, 12 rebounds) as the Argos shot 51% for the game and outrebounded CBU 36-30.
GSC OPENER HISTORY
- UWF is looking for its first conference schedule opening win since defeating Mississippi College 78-75 on Nov. 13, 2012. It was the first year that MC rejoined the GSC. A win against the Blazers would snap a three-game losing skid when opening conference play.
EMERGING LEADER
- -In three of UWF's first five games,
Jason Laatsch has led UWF in scoring and scored a season-high 17 points on Nov. 22 against Spring Hill.
- As a sophomore in 2014-15, Laatsch led the team in points in five games. Last year, Laatsch led the team in just one contest.
Laatsch currently ranks 20th in the GSC with 13.6 points per game, 12th in free throw percentage (77.8) and three-point field goals per game with 1.8.
IMPACT ADDITIONS
- 29% of UWF's point total this year have come from new additions to the team, led by
Darryl Tucker who is averaging 7.8 points per game.
- 40% of UWF's rebound total have come from newcomers as well, which is also led by Tucker who is averaging 6.4 rebounds per game.
- UWF's newcomers, consisting of Herni Ventoniemi, Tucker,
Moter Deng,
DJ Thorpe and
Marvin Jones, have combined to shoot 43.6% (44-101) this season.

Mario Stramaglia is within striking distance of the program's career three point field goals record, currently having 108. Stramaglia is currently in fifth place, and needs 24 more to tie Marcus Tanner's (1999-02) record.
