MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The UWF men's basketball team ran into a Christian Brothers team with a perfect 3-0 Gulf South Conference record Saturday afternoon and despite holding an early 20-11 lead in the first half, CBU was able to shake off the early deficit and stay perfect in GSC play with an 86-74 victory.
The Bucs (7-3, 4-0 GSC) erased that 20-11 lead with a 13-3 run over 3:56 in the first half. After CBU's Jack Hummel grabbed an offensive board and converted on the second-chance opportunity to give Christian Brothers a 36-34 lead, the Bucs did not trail for the remainder of the contest.
UWF (5-3, 0-3 GSC) shot well for the contest, converting at a 42.6% clip. West Florida was limited in trying to mount a second-half comeback by going just 1-of-8 from three-point distance.
The Argonauts also out-rebounded CBU 38-32 with
Deangelo Legrier recording a game-high 10. It is the second double-digit rebound game for Legrier this season.
Austin Somerfield and
Marvin Jones each posted season-highs with 20 and 17 points, respectively. Jones went an impressive 6-of-7 from the floor, while Somerfield went 10-of-13 from the free throw line.
Christian Brothers shot 45.5% (25-55) for the game, including a strong 78.1% (25-32) rate from the free throw line. Jeff Larkin and Joe Laravie pushed the pace offensively with 29 and 26 points, respectively.
UWF led the Bucs in points in the paint (34-26) and fast break points (21-9).
The Argonauts will take a two-week break for the holiday season and resume GSC play on Dec. 31 against No. 11 Alabama Huntsville for a 2:00 p.m. New Year's Eve tilt at the UWF Field House.
