MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Senior
Alex Coyne scored a game-high 20 points and made the go-ahead free throw with 1.7 seconds in regulation to lift the UWF women's basketball team to a 63-62 come-from-behind road win over Christian Brothers at Canale Arena Saturday.
For Coyne, it was her fourth career game with at least 20 points as she added seven assists and three steals while making a pair of 3-pointers. Junior
Toni Brewer recorded her eighth double-double of the year with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Junior
Courtney Meyer, who played just three minutes in the first half after picking up three fouls, had all 10 points, four rebounds and two blocks in 19 second-half minutes.
UWF (7-2, 2-1 Gulf South Conference) shot 42 percent in the game but was just 2-of-11 from outside and 17-of-30 at the free throw line. Both teams had 15 turnovers but the Argonauts made the most of their chances, registering a 16-8 edge in points off turnovers.
The Argonauts picked up a season-high nine steals and scored eight points on those opportunities.
CBU (4-4, 1-3) got 16 points, five boards and six assists from Courtney Banks who played all 40 minutes. The Lady Bucs shot 39 percent on the day. The Argos entered the game allowing just 22.8 percent from outside and held CBU to a seas-low 17.6 percent on 3-of-17 shooting.
The teams were mired in a physical battle throughout the first quarter as UWF led 18-15. The teams combined to shoot 16 free throws and commit 14 fouls.
The Argos couldn't get going in the second quarter, making just 2-of-11 from the floor while being outscored 17-6. CBU closed the period on an 11-2 run to bring a 32-24 lead into the locker room.
The second half was a much different story as UWF got the game going at a much faster pace. The Argos scored on seven of their first 11 possessions and gained control of the game, using a 18-6 run to secure a 46-38 lead with 2:51 left in the third. The 28 points by the Blue and White were their third-highest in a quarter this year.
CBU didn't back down, scoring the first six points in the fourth to climb within 52-51 1:37 into the period. But the Argonauts never trailed despite having the score tied twice in the final two minutes.
The final tie came at 62-62 with a minute to play. After each team failed to score, Coyne was fouled driving to the basket as time expired sending her to the line for a pair of free throws. After putting 1.7 seconds back on the clock, Coyne made one of two to put UWF ahead.
The Lady Bucs advanced the ball after a timeout and got a good look from the top of the key, but Rafaelia Angelidou's ball caromed in-and-out as time expired.
UWF will be off for two weeks before returning to play on New Year's Eve when the squad hosts Alabama Huntsville (1-7, 0-3) at Noon at the UWF Field House.
