February 19, 2016 CLINTON, Miss. –
Caitlin Steel's ninth-inning, two run single lifted the University of West Florida softball team over Mississippi College on Friday to improve its record to 10-4 on the year. With the 4-2 win, the Argonauts also even their record in the Gulf South Conference, with a 2-2 mark.
Steel brought in the game-winner in the ninth inning, with one of UWF's five hits.
Rhiannon Sassman led the inning off by reaching on an error by the centerfielder, and
Jessica Wilkinson drew a walk two batters later to put a second runner on. With
Chelsy Krantz pinch-running for Wilkinson, Steel ripped a two-out single into left field with two on, and Sassman and Krantz came around to score on a throwing error made by the left fielder.
Pitcher
Becca Taylor went the distance for UWF, throwing nine innings while striking out five, walking none and allowing just two runs. Taylor's efforts lowered her season ERA to 2.16, while it was her fourth complete game of the year and her second that came in an extra-inning game.
Meghan Toney recorded her fourth multi-hit game of the season, going 2-2 with a walk and a run scored in the win.
Kathleen Smiley singled in the sixth inning to bring in Toney to score, extending Smiley's on-base streak to 12 games.
Rachel Wright, who walked twice in the contest, has reached in 10 straight and scored on a first-inning grounder from
Jacey Castro.
West Florida will finish the series with a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon beginning at 2 in Clinton.
