LAKELAND, Fla. – The No. 6-ranked University of West Florida women's tennis team defeated Florida Southern 8-1 on the road Friday afternoon. West Florida (10-2, 5-0 GSC) improves its record against south region opponents to 7-2 with the win.
Senior
Katarina Dikosavljevic (Queensland, Australia) and junior
Hannah Toro (London, England) improved to 3-2 on the year by defeating Sasha Nionova and Linnea Skymberg 8-3 at number one doubles. Dikosavljevic and Toro were ranked No. 8 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association south region rankings.
Senior
Nina Bubelova (Povazska Bystrica, Slovakia) and junior
Paula Lopez (Tucumán, Argentina) won their 10
th match of the season by defeating Selin Devrimci and Lorena Rionda 8-2 at number two doubles.
Freshman
Dianna Vlad (Oberhausen, Germany) and freshman
Valeria Mantilla (Bogotá, Colombia) defeated Cassie Eldredge and Natalija Popovic 8-3 at number three doubles.
No. 32 Dikosavljevic defeated Skymberg 6-2, 4-6, 10-3 at number one singles while Lopez improved to 9-2 with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Devrimci at number two singles.
No. 42 Bubelova defeated Popovic 6-4, 6-4 at number four singles en route to the senior's 50
th career singles victory.
Heather Mixon (New Iberia, La./Catholic HS) improved to 10-0 on the year with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Carolyn Cureton at number five singles while Mantilla swept Katie Stanford 6-0, 6-0 at number six singles. Vlad fell to Rionda 2-6, 7-6, 8-10 at number three singles.
West Florida will next face No. 27 Rollins on Saturday, March 19 at 10 a.m. before wrapping up the road trip on Sunday, March 20 against No. 7 Nova Southeastern at 9 a.m.
