UWF Women's Tennis Rolls Valdosta State for GSC Championship

Argonauts claimed their 16th GSC women’s title and sixth-consecutive

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The UWF women's tennis team completed a sweep of the regular season and postseason in the Gulf South Conference, capping the run with a 5-1 victory over Valdosta State in the title match at the O'Connor Tennis Center at Lagoon Park Saturday.

The win gave UWF (22-5) its record 16th GSC title and sixth-consecutive, while securing the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Championships. The Argonauts will find out where they are headed on Tuesday, May 3.

UWF claimed two of the three doubles matches to grab a 2-1 edge in the early going. The Argonauts needed just three wins to secure the victory.

They got the first two at Nos. 3 and 6 when Nina Bubelova and Heather Mixon claimed straight-set matches. Sarai Flores clinched the title with a 6-1, 1-6, 6-0 win over Jospehine Jedrychowski at No. 4, setting off a jubilant celebration for the Argos.

"It was a tough match," head coach Derrick Racine said. "The girls played really well in doubles, and Valdosta really showed up today and fought hard. We played them earlier in the year and it wasn't quite as tight a match, but you could tell they really wanted it as well. We got two out of the three doubles, which really helped us. And then in singles we used that momentum, and the girls played really well at every position in singles.

"This is the toughest region by far, and it's tough to get out of our region. You can be No. 3 in the country and not be out of the region. We're looking forward to it, that's what we play for. We're excited to see where we end up, and we'll give it our all and see if we can get through it."

The conference championship is the second this athletic year for UWF – joining women's swimming & diving — giving the university 86 titles all time.
