Freshman Marjorie Boilesen Scores Twice in Season-Opening Win Over No. 15 Tampa

4-0 victory gives UWF biggest win in all-time series vs. Spartans

MELBOURNE, Fla. – West Florida freshman Marjorie Boilesen began her collegiate career on the right foot on Friday night, scoring twice in a 4-0 West Florida win over No. 15 Tampa in Melbourne. The game represented UWF's largest margin of victory in the all-time series against Tampa, which the Argonauts now lead 6-5-1. Boilesen's was the first multi-goal game for a UWF freshman since Sara Helgadottir turned a hat trick against West Alabama on November 1, 2013.

"I think the team was really strong today," Boilesen said. "We trusted each other on the field, and listening to our coaches, we're getting better and better, and I'm sure that we're going to keep getting better."

UWF held possession and dominated the offensive side of the pitch for much of the game. The first show of the team's authority over the ball came in the first 20 seconds of the match, when Boilesen through the Tampa defense and put on a shot that missed the goal high. The Brazilian scrambled through the Spartan back line just eight minutes later and converted on a low shot that passed a diving Sydney Ross of Tampa for her first collegiate goal.

West Florida stretched the lead to 2-0 in the 28th minute on a free kick from Bri Young near the midfield line that found senior midfielder Emily Vogler. Just eight yards from the net, Vogler flicked back a header that volleyed over Ross' outstretched hand.

Vogler added another point on Boilesen's second goal of the day in the 54th minute. Vogler played a ball on the ground to Boilesen just inside the 18-yard box, and the freshman chipped a shot over Ross to put UWF up 3-0 with 37 minutes left on the clock.

Helgadottir added the 11th goal of her career in the 71st minute on a low ball from junior Kaljit Atwal, giving the Argonauts an insurmountable 4-0 lead.

"We've been really excited during the whole preseason and this is the game we were waiting for, so we left it all out there," Helgadottir said. "I'm so proud of the team, everyone worked so hard. We can still do better, but this was really good."

The UWF midfield and defense held Tampa to just six shots on the day and only one in the first half, compared to UWF's 14 over the full 90 minutes. Boilesen led all players with three shots on goal, while Atwal added two and freshman keeper Elizabeth Bankhead made three saves in net for UWF.

"We talked about our spine of the team and our senior leadership, and I thought Svenja, Vogler, Sara and Kaley did a fantastic job today," West Florida women's soccer head coach Joe Bartlinski said. "I'm pleased for the youngsters working hard, before preseason and during preseason, to get a result like today."

West Florida is back in action on Sunday, facing Florida Tech at noon ET in Melbourne. The game will feature live stats and a live video broadcast, and links will be available at GoArgos.com.
