PENSACOLA, Fla. – It wasn't as pretty as some may have preferred for their first home game after a 3-game road trip, but Saturday's 63-57 win for No. 19 UWF over a pesky West Georgia squad will suit
Stephanie Lawrence Yelton's club just fine.
Â
UWF (12-3, 7-2 Gulf South) shot 38 percent against the Wolves' 2-3 zone but again got another strong defensive effort to improve to 5-1 at home. The Argonauts, winners of six of their last seven, moved into sole possession in the GSC race after Saturday.
Â
Senior
Katie Bobos continued her hot play of late with 13 points and 14 rebounds for her sixth double-double in the last seven games. Junior
Shami Goodman had a breakout performance with a game-high 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting and seven rebounds. The transfer from Northwest Florida State scored her first five points of the season on Thursday at West Alabama as she continues on her improvement from off-season surgery.
Â
Senior
Alex Coyne scored nine points – on three 3-pointers – and dished out eight assists for the second-consecutive outing, while junior
Toni Brewer had nine points, six rebounds and a pair of steals.
Â
UWF tied its season-high with 15 assists and was 7-of-18 for 39 percent from outside.
Â
West Georgia (6-7, 5-4) shot just 36 percent and was 5-of-22 from 3-point range. Da'Shia Jones led the Wolves with 14 points, six rebounds and three blocks.
Â
UWF opened up a 19-10 lead after the first quarter before UWG battled back to within 29-26 at the half. The Wolves closed the second quarter on a 10-2 run.
Â
The Argos stretched the lead to double digits midway through the third quarter, staking a 44-33 edge with 3:56 on the clock. But the Wolves again fought back. After making just 2-of-12 to start the fourth, UWG trimmed the deficit to 55-52 with just 2:00 to play in the game. UWF got a 3-pointer from Coyne and three free throws from Goodman and Bobos to regain control, 61-52 with 59 seconds left.
Â
UWF will continue its 3-game homestand next week when it welcomes Mississippi College (7-5, 5-4) to town on Thursday night at 5:30 p.m. The Lady Choctaws have won their last four games after dropping their previous four.
