ATLANTA – In the final event of the UWF swimming and diving team's regular season, two-time national champion
Monica Amaral won both the 1-meter events and the lone 3-meter event. No. 10 West Florida fell to top-ranked Division III foe Emory and NSISC rival No. 4 Delta State on the day.
Amaral scored a 296.20 in the 6-dive, 1-meter event and 298.65 in the 6-dive, 3-meter event. The second-place finisher in each of those events was 60 points behind and 68 points behind, respectively. Her score in the 3-meter was a season-best, and she also took the crown in the 11-dive, 1-meter event, with a 488.30, winning by more than 80 points. The senior from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, currently holds the top 11-dive, 1-meter score in Division II (503.24), and ranks sixth across all collegiate divisions. She has won all but one 3-meter event she has competed in since the 2015 NCAA DII Championships.
Freshman and Panama City, Florida, native
Carson Bronnenberg set personal bests in all three events. She finished third in the 6-dive, 1-meter event (218.05), fourth in the field of 10 in the 6-dive, 3-meter event (219.10) and fifth in the 11-dive, 1-meter event (359.95). Senior
Meghan Zets stood out in the 3-meter (225.50), finishing just ahead of Bronnenberg, and in the 11-dive, 1-meter event (380.15), where she finished third.
Several Argonauts took top-five finishes in the pool, with
Madeline Pitt,
Nicole Machado and
Taby Read-Cayton taking two each. Pitt claimed podium spots with a third-place finish in a tough 1000 Free (10:33.71) and second in the 400 IM (4:33.01), while Machado took top fives in both backstroke races, finishing the 100 in 1:00.48 and finishing the 200 in 2:10.25.
Read-Cayton followed up on a strong performance last week at Birmingham Southern, finishing fifth in the 50 Free (24.50) and the 100 Fly (1:01.27). Fellow freshman
Lauren Johnson finished just outside the top five in the 100 Fly, at 1:01.28. Senior
Theresa Michalak tied Pitt for the high finish of the day, going 1:04.88 in the 100 Breast and taking second place.
Senior
Rebecca Halfast took fifth in the 200 Free (1:57.13),
Brooke Ferrara finished fifth in the 100 Back (1:00.75) and
Gabrielle Spangenberg finished the 200 Breast in 2:31.18, good for fifth place.
UWF will visit Cleveland, Mississippi, on February 15-18 for the NSISC Championships.
