CARROLLTON, Ga. – A game after suffering its worst shooting performance of the season, the UWF women's basketball team knew it would need a stronger effort to overcome a tough West Georgia defense in order to come out with a road victory. Unfortunately for the 14th-ranked Argos, a 32 percent shooting day and a scoreless drought of nearly four minutes allowed the Wolves to emerge with a 54-53 win at The Coliseum.
Â
UWF (16-4, 11-3 Gulf South) missed seven free throws on Saturday and was just 4-of-16 in the fourth quarter. The Argos also turned the ball over 18 times which the Wolves converted into 15 points.
Â
The Argonauts controlled the glass with a 50-35 margin and an 18-8 lead in offensive rebounds.
Â
"We struggled from many areas offensively today and the largest deficiency was at the free throw line," UWF head coach Stephanie Yelton said. "We'll take this opportunity to bounce back stronger. Five games in nine days was a tough stretch in the schedule. We still have many opportunities to get better."
Â
UWF broke a 34-34 tie midway through the third quarter with a 9-2 run over the final 4:38. That 45-36 lead was erased in the first 3:10 of the fourth quarter as West Georgia scored the first nine points. From there, the teams traded scores until a
Alex Coyne to
Courtney Meyer lob pass down low resulted in a layup for the junior forward and a 53-51 UWF lead with 3:55 left.
Â
West Georgia then made 1-of-2 free throws on its next possession and a pair of freebies with 1:56 on the clock to finish the scoring at 54-53. The Argonauts ended up missing their final six shots, including a contested shot at the buzzer from
Toni Brewer.
Â
Senior
Katie Bobos led UWF with 14 points, 14 rebounds and four steals as she registered her tenth double-double of the year. Meyer had nine points – six in the fourth quarter – to go along with eight boards and two blocks.
Â
West Georgia (8-9, 7-6) shot 34 percent and was 10-of-11 at the line. De'Ashia Jones had a game-high 17 points, 14 rebounds, five blocks, four assists and four steals to lead the Wolves, who improved to 6-2 at home this season.
Â
UWF saw its 6-game winning streak come to a close, but also went 4-1 over the last nine days.
Â
The Argos, who still lead the GSC by a game-and-a-half over North Alabama, will be back in a normal Thursday-Saturday schedule for the final four weeks of the regular season, beginning next week at Delta State (8-10, 5-8). Tipoff at Walter Sillers Coliseum on Thursday is set for 5:30 p.m.
