CLINTON, Miss. –
David Born's two late goals in the 69th and 80th minutes were not quite enough for the University of West Florida men's soccer team in its loss against Mississippi College in the first round of the Gulf South Conference Tournament on Tuesday afternoon. UWF fell to 7-8-1 on the year, while third-seeded MC improved to 11-2-3.
After strong defense on each side for the first 36 minutes of play, Mississippi College was able to jump ahead 2-0 in the final nine minutes of the first half and take that advantage to the break. The Choctaws added another in the 68th minute, but the Argonauts resolve would not be held down.
Just seven seconds after MC's third goal,
David Born found the net for his first goal of the year, and Born would strike again 11 minutes later off a corner kick from
Tristan Rehrig, bringing the deficit to 2-3 with 11 minutes left.
A last-ditch effort from Ed Chappe in the 85th minute left the Argonauts inches away from drawing the score to a tie, as a shot from the rookie hit the crossbar and was cleared away by the Choctaws.
It was a career day for Born, who finished with three shots on goal and the two goals.
The Argos likely finish their season with a 7-8-1 record, despite a strong finish with a 4-2-1 record in their last seven matches that saw the team outscore the opposition 15-9.
