PENSACOLA, Fla. – UWF volleyball (13-4, 5-0 GSC) hits the road this weekend for matches at Union (Tenn.) and Christian Brothers. The Argos have won ten straight matches and swept three straight opponents. The squad has dropped just one set so far in conference play.
The first match of the weekend is slated at Union (11-7, 2-4 GSC) Friday at 6:00 pm. The team travels from Jackson to Memphis for a Saturday matchup vs. Christian Brothers (8-10, 3-3 GSC) at 1:00 pm. The Argos are set to return home Tuesday, October 10 vs. North Alabama.
ARGOS KEEP ROLLING
* The Argos stayed perfect in conference play with wins Saturday and Tuesday over Auburn Montgomery and West Georgia. The team has not dropped a set since its 3-1 win at North Alabama September 22 and has not dropped a match since falling to Florida Southern at the Colorado Premier Challenge September 9.
* Senior Rachel Neblett was named the GSC Offensive Player of the Week three times in the month of September (September 5, 19, 26). The GSC Offensive Player of the Week awards gave her a total of four for her career.
* Jordyn Poppen led UWF to a 3-0 win Tuesday vs. West Georgia with 13 kills and a .500 hitting percentage.
* The Argos received 51 votes in the latest AVCA poll and sit just outside the Top 25 in NCAA Division II.
CURRENT GSC/NCAA LEADERS
* Rachel Neblett ranks 1st in the GSC and is 10th nationally with a hitting percentage of .421. Caleigh Morrison ranks 6th in the GSC with a .315 hitting percentage.
* In the GSC, Neblett ranks 5th with 3.63 kills per set and 8th with 0.42 service aces per set. Neblett is second in the GSC with 4.56 points per set.
* Monique StCyr ranks 2nd in the GSC with 9.65 assists per set. Brogan Wallin ranks 10th with 5.73 assists per set.
* In the GSC, Neblett ranks 4th with 0.93 blocks per set. Morrison ranks T-7th with 0.86 blocks per set.
* Logan Kael ranks 7th in the GSC with 4.06 digs per set.
* UWF leads the GSC with a .251 hitting percentage, 13.48 assists per set, 14.48 kills per set, and 0.80 opponent service aces per set. The team is 4th in blocks with 1.95 per set. UWF ranks 5th in the GSC with 16.10 digs per set.
GSC DOMINANCE
* UWF opens continues its GSC schedule on the road vs. Union and Christian Brothers. The Argos have won five straight in conference play and have notched three straight sweeps. The team is 3-0 overall on the road this season.
* Since Melissa Wolter took over the UWF volleyball program prior to the 2003 season, West Florida has been nearly unstoppable in GSC play, owning a 173-24 record. Last year the Argonauts went 17-3 in GSC action and 7-3 on the road. UWF currently has a 64-match winning streak during regular season home games against conference opponents. The last loss for UWF in a GSC regular season home game came against North Alabama on October 24, 2009.
* UWF won six consecutive GSC Championships from 2008-2013. UWF currently owns the longest active streak of 20-win seasons in the GSC, which currently stands at 13 (not including 2004 season shortened by Hurricane Ivan). Valdosta State and North Alabama are tied for the second longest active streak of 20-win seasons in the GSC at three. UWF has reached 11 consecutive NCAA South Regional Tournaments.
SCOUTING UNION
* Union stands at 11-7 overall this season and is 2-4 in conference play. The Lady Bulldogs are 1-2 at home. The team won 6 of its first 7 matches this season but has gone 5-6 since. The team dropped three straight matches to begin GSC play but bounced back with 3-1 victories over Mississippi College and West Georgia September 26 and 29. The team most recently fell at Montevallo 0-3.
* Union is led by third-year head coach Darrin McClure. McClure previously served as the head coach of Tennessee Martin for 7 seasons. Entering this year, his coaching record at four year institutions is 97-185. He was 21-39 over his first two years at Union.
* Union was picked by GSC coaches to finish 10th this year in conference play. The team returns three starters and seven letterwinners from last year's team. The team had no preseason All-GSC selections. Kristen Bukowsky and Clare Taylor were named the team's Top Newcomers for the 2017 season.
* Katie O'Malley ranks 7th in the GSC with 3.06 kills per set. O'Malley checks in at 9th in the conference with 3.46 points per set. Kristen Goggin ranks 4th with 0.52 service aces per set. Bre Carlton ranks 5th in the GSC with 8.09 assists per set.
* UWF is 9-1 since 2012 vs. Union. The Argos are 5-0 at home and 4-1 on the road vs. the Lady Bulldogs. The Argos fell to Union in Jackson, Tenn. 1-3 October 4, 2016 before bouncing back with a 3-0 win on November 4.
SCOUTING CHRISTIAN BROTHERS
* Christian Brothers enters play this weekend at 8-10 and 3-3 in conference play. The team is 5-2 at home this season. The Argos have won 9 matches in a row and are 15-2 since 2005 vs. the Lady Bucs. UWF has not dropped a match to Christian Brothers since November 2012. UWF is 5-1 at Christian Brothers since 2005, suffering its only loss in September 2012 2-3.
* Christian Brothers was picked by GSC coaches to finish fifth in the GSC. Emma Lenoir was selected to the preseason All-GSC team. Ke'alohilani Wong and Kapria Manning were selected as the team's top newcomers.
* The Lady Bucs are coached by In-Sik Hwang, who is the all-time leader in wins at Christian Brothers.
* Lenoir ranks fourth in the GSC with 3.70 kills per set. She ranks fifth with 4.11 points per set. Alexa Henderson ranks fourth in the conference with 8.85 assistsper set. Blythe Clausen ranks 6th with 4.27 digs per set. Mary Kathryn Miller ranks 9th with 0.80 blocks per set.
